Industry Insights: Airbag Recall Affects More Than 30 Million Vehicles

More than 30 million vehicles in the U.S., made by 11 different automakers, have been recalled to replace defective frontal airbags.  Manufactured by parts supplier Takata, these airbags were mostly installed in cars from model year 2002 – 2008, although the recall has been expanded through 2014 in some cases. The affected airbag inflators were made with a propellant that can degrade over time, leading to ruptures that have been blamed for seven deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide.

EPIC Transportation Risk Control specialist Michael Nischan encourages drivers of vehicles manufactured from 2002-2014 to use the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN search tool to ensure that vehicles under recall are identified and fixed immediately.
