Viewpoints from Michelle Andres, MS, MCHES®

October 10 marks World Mental Health Day, a global reminder of the importance of mental wellbeing — not just in our personal lives, but also in the workplace. The conversation around mental health has come a long way, with growing awareness and a welcome shift toward destigmatization. But there’s still work to do.

On a personal note, my stepdaughter recently faced a challenge many college students know too well: she needed support, but her university’s counseling center was booked solid. Thankfully, her school partners with TELUS, giving her 24/7 access to mental health resources. We also connected her with next-day telecounseling through her EAP – a powerful reminder of how timely support can make all the difference. And I know this story isn’t unique; many families have faced similar moments of uncertainty, making it all the more important that we continue expanding access to timely, compassionate care.

Why Mental Health Matters at Work

Mental health directly impacts how we show up at work – our productivity, engagement, and overall wellbeing. Stress, burnout, and anxiety are common challenges, and employers play a critical role in creating environments where employees feel supported and safe to seek help.

Spotlight on Benefits that Support Mental Health

Many organizations offer resources that employees may not realize are available:

  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)
EAPs offer confidential support for a range of issues – from counseling and crisis support to legal and financial guidance. Enhanced EAP models even include telehealth and app-based access, making help more accessible than ever.
  • Mental Health Coverage in Health Plans
Therapy, psychiatry, and medication benefits are often included in health plans. Telehealth options make it easier to connect with professionals without the wait or commute.
  • Wellness Programs
Mindfulness apps like Headspace or Calm, stress management webinars, and fitness or nutrition programs all contribute to mental wellness. These aren’t just perks – they’re tools for resilience.
How to Take Action on World Mental Health Day

This is a great time to:

  • Explore your company’s benefits and resources
  • Join a webinar or event focused on mental health
  • Share helpful tools with colleagues
  • Reflect on your own mental health and reach out if you need support
Prioritize Your Mental Health Year-Round

Mental health should never take a back seat to physical health – and it deserves our attention every day, not just on October 10. National resources, such as NAMI and Mental Health America, offer support beyond the workplace. Let’s continue to prioritize wellbeing, support one another, and keep the conversation going.
